1958 - Wallabies in California

The first match was on Thursday 27 March 1958 at Witter Rugby Field against the University of California (also known as the Golden Bears). The second match on Saturday 29 March was against an "All-Stars" team that had 7 players backing up from the Thursday match but also included Australian-born players John Dowse, who went on to represent the Wallabies in 1961 and Derry Hill who played for NSW 3 times from 1956-60.

Tom Browne
Artist

Tom Browne was an English cartoonist, painter and illustrator, born on 8th December 1870 he started work as a milliner’s errand boy in 1882. From there he became an apprentice to lithograph printers, and made a living drawing freelance cartoons for London comic papers.

The Rugby Memorabilia Society had the honour of helping Bryn Meredith (former Welsh International & British Lion) sell part of his vast collection of memorabilia he had amassed during his playing days over a series of auctions in 2016.

1977 Counties-Thames Valley v British Lions:
3rd August 1977

The Lions again had the better of the possession – their massive scrummaging power leading to four of their five tries – but ragged attacks by the backs were quickly stemmed by the combined side and it was not until well into the second half that the tourists gained control.

Glasgow & District vs South Africa
28th October 1931

The first match in Scotland for the 1931 touring Springboks was against a combined Glasgow & District side, overnight rain the night before would hamper the visitors. With Springbok tour Captain Bennie Osler still on the injury list, Centre JC Van Der Westhuizen would once again lead the side.

John “Jack” Gladstone Scoular

Jack Scoular was born on September 17th 1885 in Whitehaven, Cumberland. Selected for both England and Scotland, he elected to play for Scotland and made his debut against the 1905 All Blacks, a close match won by the tourists 12 points to 7. In 1906 he would play four more times for the Scots.
